BIG SHOULDERS BOOKS

CHRIS SOLIS GREEN, MILES HARVEY & MICHELE MORANO

CO-FOUNDERS & CURRENT FACULTY

More than a decade ago, Chris Solis Green, Miles Harvey and Michele Morano came up with a decidedly impractical and unlikely idea—establish a social-justice publishing company that would disseminate, free-of-charge, books by and about Chicagoans whose voices might not otherwise be amplified. Now, with seven books in print and more than 100,000 copies in circulation, the three DePaul faculty members are proud to produce good literature while making substantive contributions to discussions of injustice and inequality in Chicago. Big Shoulders Books is also a true collaboration among DePaul faculty members, students, funders and members of various communities who've lent their talents and stories to the project.
Michele, Chris and I thought, ‘What if we try to do this thing, Big Shoulders Books?’ It was wildly ambitious right from the start, but why launch [a publishing house] at all if we are not ambitious?
