JOHN M. MCCANN

CLASS OF 1948

FORMER SPORTS INFO DIRECTOR

After completing his tour of duty in the United States Navy, John McCann earned his undergraduate degree in 1948. As sports publicity director, he was instrumental in the development of DePaul’s mascot, Billy Blue Demon, and was inducted into the DePaul Athletics Hall of Fame in 2004. The McCann family has continued its legacy at the university, his three children and five of his grandchildren are now DePaul graduates.
Being selected to the DePaul Athletics Hall of Fame and being responsible for using Billy Blue Demon as the basketball mascot created by Gene Tarpey for the first time were my father's proudest achievements at DePaul.
