TARELL ALVIN MCCRANEY
CLASS OF 2003
OSCAR-WINNING PLAYWRIGHT, SCREENWRITER AND ACTOR
Tarell Alvin McCraney graduated from The Theatre School in 2003 and won an Academy Award in 2017 for Best Adapted Screenplay for the movie "Moonlight." The Oscar-winning story originated from a class project he had as a Blue Demon student. McCraney says playwriting is about giving a voice to the voiceless and during his acceptance speech for “Moonlight,” he said, “This goes out to all those black and brown boys and girls and non-gender-conforming [people] who don’t see themselves [on the screen]. We’re trying to show you you, and us. This is for you.”
